Meet Our Residents

CHEWY

Chewy is an Australian Shephard. He is a herding dog. We initially got him for our son Matt. We intended to use him as a therapy dog. He is most definitely the alpha in the group. He is much bigger than the rest of our Aussies. He comes from champion blood-lines and is very loyal. At times, he has herded our chickens back into their coops. He goes in and out of the coops with me. What is more interesting about Chewy is that he is ALL personality. He is known for making a smiling face when he gets in trouble, he will talk (so he fits his name Chewbacca and we call him Chewy for short). We have 3 Aussies. He was the first one we got.

LEIA

I’ve always loved blue-eyed dogs. So, when I saw this sweet face, I could not pass it up. All of my married life, I’ve had male dogs. She is our first female dog. She was supposed to belong to Bethany, however, she is partial to me and my “Mom-Toppert”. She loves to be outside. She is a well-behaved dog indoors and looks after Luke and still cares for him.

LUKE - How did we end up with 3 dogs? Well, Leia was scheduled to be spayed. She went into heat, we separated her, Chewy pushed through the door and the rest is history. 10 puppies later, we had a house full of cuteness. Luke was quickly picked out by Matthew and there was no changing his mind. I love them all and couldn’t imagine farm-life without any of them!

CHICKENS - So why do we keep chickens. Is it to make money off of eggs (nope, we don’t even break even with the cost of feeding them). We keep chickens because they eat bugs and provide rich compost. In addition, I enjoy them so they have become part of my self-care; they are very entertaining creatures.

DUCKS - So why ducks? Well, first and foremost they remind me of my grandfather. He had a little Pekin duck. Did you know that duck poop is more nutrient dense than chicken poop, and it doesn't need to be composted before using it in the garden. They eat slugs and bugs and make us excellent fertilizer for our gardens.
